Architecture and Development: Catarina de Almeida Brito + Richard John Seymour
Location: Alcácer do Sal, Portugal
Size: 138 sqm
Architectural development of a modern house originally built in the 70s, in Alcácer do Sal’s lively historic centre. Casa do Mercado was sensitively restored using natural, raw, local materials with a rustic feel while introducing modern amenities.
The house is delivered furnished, featuring a selection of one-off furniture pieces commissioned for this project.
‘Michelangelo’ Portuguese marble, raw plaster, glazed terracotta tiles and oiled french oak floor — these tactile materials are an ode to the way of life in Alentejo.
The furniture has been carefully selected and hails mainly from artisans in Spain and Portugal with materials such as bulrush, jute, and rafia. Other notable pieces include a coffee table by Lisbon-based French carpenter Paul Boucher and a floor rug designed by Vincent Van Duysen.
Casa do Mercado, or ‘Market House’ was owned by a family of farmers who used the house when travelling from the countryside to the town’s historic market just around the corner. Today, it is a peaceful sanctuary in the middle of the buzzing town centre.
The house is currently for sale with Fantastic Frank Lisbon and Engel & Völkers Comporta.
